KIDDIE/JUNIOR FIRE MARSHAL PROJECT

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and its line agency, the kfmBureau of Fire Protection (BFP) conceptualized the Kiddie/Junior Fire Marshal (K/JFM) Project with the end view of creating a more effective awareness campaign for children (both in and out of school) and educating them about fire safety and prevention. The K/JFM Project also aims to develop our youth to be role models even to the older generation, who will actually practice and observe fire safety and prevention at home, in school and in the community.

The DILG-BFP invited the Department of Education (DepED) to be their partner in this undertaking. The curriculum specialists/writers of the elementary and secondary education Bureaus of the DepEd developed the modules based on the fire safety practices espoused by the DILG-BFP. The DepEd the identified the entry points in the existing curriculum for kindergarten, elementary and high school, both in public and private schools.

The DILG-BFP and the DepEd pilot tested the K/JFM Project using twenty-two modules developed by the DepEd for kindergarten, elementary and high school students. The modules were reviewed, critiqued and validated in Quezon City, Baguio City and the province of Pampanga for the Luzon area, Cebu City in Region 7 for the Visayas area, and Davao City in Region 11 for the Mindanao area, to further solicit suggestions and recommendations directly from the teachers who are going to use the modules in order to test the modules’ adequacy in the learning approaches suitable for each level.

Likewise, DILG-BFP requested MERALCO to support this project by coming up with a Learning Video to cover the other facets of learning.

Kiddie/Junior Fire Marshal Objectives:

  • To teach the learners in the kindergarten, grade school and high school of the importance of fire safety at home and in school.
  • To influence their parents and other members of the family to take fire safety precautions at home and workplace.
  • To have the students effectively involved in the fire safety awareness campaign as a way of life.
  • To initiate attitude change among sectors of society who are indifferent to the fire prevention campaign.
