BFP to celebrate its 20th Anniversary

26 July 2011

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) will be celebrating its 20th year anniversary on August 2, 2011. In preparation for the said event, different activities will be conducted nationwide focusing on the highlights and achievements of the Bureau with the theme: “BFP: Two Decades of Committed Service to the Filipino People.”

On August 2 at 7 a.m., a mass will be celebrated at the new BFP National Headquarters building at Agham Road, Quezon City. BFP personnel, together with some guests, will then be witnessing the unveiling of marker and ribbon-cutting. At 8 o’clock in the morning, there will be a blessing of the building to be officiated by the Military Ordinariate of the Philippines (MOP) Bishop, Most Rev. Leopoldo S. Tumulak, DD, MA.

In the afternoon, the program proper for the anniversary will start at exactly 5 p.m. at the Quezon City Sports Complex at E. Rodriguez Sr. Ave., Quezon City. DILG Secretary HON. JESSE M. ROBREDO will grace the celebration as the Guest of Honor and Speaker.

One of the most awaited events in the celebration is the awarding of the Ten Outstanding Pilipino Firefighters (TOPF) and the recognition of the Local Chief Executives, which their effort have been part of the BFP’s success in its fire prevention campaigns and programs.

The enactment of Republic Act 6975, otherwise known as the Department of Interior and Local Government Act of 1990 paved the way for the establishment of the Bureau of Fire Protection as separate entity. It was on August 2, 1991 when the inaugural operation of the Bureau of Fire Protection started as a distinct agency of the government, with its initial preparation of Operation Plans and Budget (OPB) undertaken by the staff of the National Chief Fire Marshal’s office at Camp Crame, Quezon City headed by the then F/BRIG GENERAL ERNESTO MADRIAGA who took over from the long reign of F/MAJ PRIMO D CORDETA, the first Chief Fire Marshal (1978-1989).

In its 20 years of existence, the Bureau of Fire Protection continues to produce dedicated firefighters and acquire up-to-date equipment in order to deliver a fast and efficient public service. With its modernization programs on cue, the Fire Bureau is certain to achieve its goal of reducing the country’s number of fire incidents in the coming years, making its every anniversary a momentous one.//
